Spark Writers reward grade kids for 'Dreamers and Doers' essays
In celebration of the Capital Region K Virtual Assembly, Spark Writers hosted an essay contest for students in Greater Lansing. The contest had two categories, for grades K-6 and grades The prompt was inspired by bestselling author Kwame Alexander, who spoke at the assembly. In his book "The Undefeated," Alexander celebrates the dreamers and the doers of the world. The prompt asked students to describe someone in their life who is a dreamer and a doer, or to describe how they hope to be a dreamer and doer themselves.

Our universe is incomprehensibly large. In comparison to the several galaxies, we are as consequential as a speck of dust. There are several people in history that have impacted how our world looks today.
These two influential people were just that, people. They were born, lived their lives and died. But in between, they managed to change my life and the life of several women and African Americans. Because of them, our world is a different and better place. Changing the world is a process and one that is usually done unintentionally. It begins with something small, like a pebble being thrown into a pond.
From there, the effect ripples outward, affecting more and more individuals. The line between changing the world and just living in it is a blurred one, but I can confidently say Marie Curie and Lucretia Mott did so. Marie Curie carved a path for females in STEM where there was none and created opportunities for several generations of women. Like Marie Curie, I am drawn to the expansive field of science. In my future, I see myself following this path while working to help and heal others as a doctor.
I also see myself actively assisting those in need. My parents came from a country where not many opportunities were available. Oftentimes, they would find themselves in life or death situations. Because of the danger in their home country, they immigrated to America and began a family. As a result of their decision, doors were opened for my siblings and I, and we were given opportunities that could change our life and the life of others. I would like to spread that joy and assist others.
At this moment in time, I am a dreamer, the best essay in the world. In the future, I see myself as a doer. Everything around her was a foreign thing. She dreamed of becoming a doctor, of being able to achieve something so high and mighty, something that people had derided her for. And as Wendy dreamed, she worked. Long nights studying with strained eyes, skipping beautiful spring days to research and learn.
She rose from the ashes, and now, so many years later, Wendy is a doctor in Iowa. A brilliant, splendid future lies ahead of her, because not only is she a dreamer, she is a doer. I hope for myself to be able to not only dream — because goodness knows I do enough of that already — but do. Dreams cannot become reality without first passing the bridge of diligence.
Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world. I think Wendy would agree. A dreamer is a doer who has not done anything yet.
Now, this is not to say that the two are completely separate things. In fact, the doer will do nothing without a dream. The dreamer will never see their dreams in flesh without ever doing anything.

If someone wants to be a doer, they would first need to be a dreamer. Throughout my life, I will look for things that can be improved. My dreams will be to fix these flaws.
